George Anthony Spanos is a first-generation Greek-American with a PhD in Oriental Studies from the University of Arizona. His formal academic training encompasses classical Chinese philosophy, language and linguistics, classical Greek philosophy and language, and general philosophy (logic, philosophy of language, and aesthetics). He has taught Western and Eastern philosophy at Soochow University, Taiwan (1977-1979), and presently teaches IB TOK, IB philosophy, and mainstream psychology at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia. He enjoys playing guitar and singing folk, blues, and country music, collecting and trading rare musical recordings, and traveling to Mediterranean and Aegean countries "with wine dark sea and the wine to match it." One of his favorite quotations is from the Dao De Jing: "Pretty words are not true; true words are not pretty."
