Steven Huxley has taught history and TOK in the IB, English to 9-15 year-olds, and coordinated CAS, in Helsinki for the last ten years. He has also worked as an examiner in both history and TOK. He came to Finland from Los Angeles in the early 1980s, initially working in his original profession of craftsman potter while completing first a M.A., and then a Ph.D., in history. While working as a researcher, he established a Finnish to English translation business, specializing in books and articles on political, historical, peace and defense issues. He is content to have left that lonely calling behind, and definitely prefers devoting his skills to students. One of his particular joys is the supervision of research work; his students' history and philosophy extended essays have gained wide recognition, and in 2003 the Academy of Finland presented him the first annual award for the most outstanding research supervisor at the upper secondary school level. Huxley loves the practical therapeutic philosophies of the Hellenistic world and the ancient Chinese, and is devoted to bicycle riding in opposition to the tyranny of the car. "Zen mind, beginner's mind" expresses his ideal attitude.
